Maintenance performed on 10/16/2005

Replaced seam from top deck to hull on port side.

Wax

Maintenance performed on 10/16/2005

Mary and I waxed all the white gelcoat this weekend.

I suspect that the Marine West Soap and Wax stuff has been leaving a film that the crud in the air was sticking to. So, I threw the rest out and have switched over to the 3M boat soap. There was still a lot of grey film on the boat, but less than in the spring. Perhaps I am slowly getting down to the real white. She sure looks good with wax on her.

I will need to wax the Portugese Bridge and high sun areas mid summer next year as they really needed a coat. I also used Miguires 44 on the stack to get a clean surface. It looks nice and bright now. The question is whether it will stay that way.

Maintenance performed on 10/16/2005

Wax all the external fiberglass twice a year.

Megular's #56 wax.

Maintenance performed on 4/30/2006

Done with NuFinish.

Maintenance for Electrical

Add new

Maintenance performed on 11/25/2005

Add 12v DC outlets to pilot house table.

I replaced the terminal block by the sterio with the correct type. Then ran a 12 guage safety wire line through the existing holes to a point under the table pedistal. I drilled a hole near the top of the pedistal and ran the line up through it and out.

Purchased a radio shack project box to mount the 12v recipticles to.

I had to stop because I did not have any more of the AMP connectors and need to varnish the teak spice rack. Below is the order from Allied electronics.

Put two lights in and a micro switch on the door.

Maintenance for Heater

Change fuel filter

Maintenance performed on 11/6/2004

Changed the fuel filter.

Change Garber fuel filter

Maintenance performed on 11/26/2005

Skipped: Change the fuel filter annually.

Sure Marine (800-562-7797) strongly recommends the use fo the Garber brand fuel filter. If a vacuum guage is installed, change the filter at - 2 lbs over installation reading.

Maintenance performed on 2/25/2006

OK

Maintenance performed on 4/21/2006

Check the coolant level in the reservoir in the faux stack.

The coolant should be 50% distilled water and 50% glycol.

Maintenance performed on 12/17/2006

Skipped. I think I will wait until spring.

Check acidity

Maintenance performed on 10/30/2005

Very alkaline.

Maintenance performed on 6/28/2006

Use the pool test kit and test for acidity. Keep the PH Factor in the 8-9 range. Acid is lower than 6. If the PH drops below 8, then change the Perry water filter. This filter has a built in alkaline material to assist in keeping the water alkaline.

Maintenance performed on 10/15/2006

The coolant should be 50% distilled water and 50% glycol.

Checked ok. Added about 1 1.5 cups.

Maintenance performed on 12/11/2005

Checked the coolant level in the reservoir in the faux stack.

I found the level low and refilled it. I checked the heater and found about 1 pint of coolant in the catch bottle but could not find out where it came from. I also found some fuel leakage from around the supply and return line ends. I tightened up the ends, but the lines should probably be replaced with pressure fuel line.

Maintenance performed on 1/22/2006

Checked OK.

Check the coolant level in the reservoir in the faux stack.

The coolant should be 50% distilled water and 50% glycol.

Maintenance performed on 5/27/2006

Maintenance performed on 2/3/2007

Checked again. Needed additional coolant last week but not this. Have rigged up an overflow bottle to see if that is where it is going. Still suspect the heater water circulation pump is doing something odd.

Maintenance performed on 3/6/2007

Seems all sealed now.

Maintenance performed on 5/5/2007

all ok

Fix leak at hot water tank

Maintenance performed on 11/12/2006

Red hose entering the tank box was leaking. Loosened both clamps and pushed hose further in to seal it. May require sealant at some point.

Reconditioning

Maintenance performed on 2/13/2005

Got burner back from Sure Marine for reconditioning.

Also installed new burn tube.

Replace Perry Walter Filter

Maintenance performed on 11/26/2005

Skipped: The coolant is still very base.

The Perry water filter / treatment filters rust and corrision particles from the system while adding more inhibitors and conditioning to the heat transfer soution. Effective treatment for the Perry filter with the PFC-24A filter cartridge is 24 gallons. This filter is avalilable from Sure Marine 800-562-7797.

Maintenance performed on 2/3/2007

Skipped since water PH was fine.

Sealed around the fuel lines

Maintenance performed on 2/18/2007

I noticed that air was being pumped out the rubber gaskets that are placed around the fuel lines. I think this was air meant to be burned and thus was enrichening the mixture. I used high temperature RTV sealer.

Maintenance for Holding Tanks

Backflush with fresh water

Maintenance performed on 12/30/2005

Back flushed the mid tank.

Maintenance performed on 4/30/2006

Each shower sump pump has a strainer located under the sink.

There is a fresh water strainer under the master bed, near the head.

Each bilge pump has a strainer.

Maintenance for Misc

Repair and replace

Maintenance performed on 12/3/2005

Removed the varnish on the salon table because it did not adhere properly and was flaking off. I used a window paint scraper and most came right off. I don't know why the varnish I put on last winter did not stick. But, it didn't. This time I sanded down to the wood and am using Pettit Z Spar. I put the first coat on today.

Maintenance performed on 4/21/2006

Sullivan does not do boats. Only alternative at this point is KKMI and that will have to wait until next year.

Maintenance for Plumbing

Replaced the black water Y valve in the master head.

Maintenance for Portholes

Clean and grease gaskets.

Maintenance performed on 2/20/2006

Open each porthole and check that the gasket is in good shape and there is no rust. Remove any rust. Use silicon grease stick and grease gasket where the porthole fits.

Maintenance performed on 3/18/2007

Used vasoline to grease gasket where the porthole fits.

Maintenance for Refrigerator

Clean cooling fins

Maintenance performed on 2/20/2006

Removed front plate at bottom of refrigerator. Found minimal lint. Also found that the cooling fins at the back of the refigerator are not accessible from the front. Looked at the cooling fins from the vent in the back wall and saw minimal lint.

Maintenance performed on 3/3/2007

Removed front plate at bottom of refrigerator and vacuum lint from the cooling fins.

Maintenance for Toilet

Clear jam

Maintenance performed on 5/12/2006

It seems this problem was a combination of the flap that seals the bottom of the bowl under the compression stroke not being centered (after rebuild) and an organic problem. Anyway, it is now cleared.

Install new seat

Maintenance performed on 5/27/2006

Installed new toilet seat in main cabin head.

Replace Aft Holding Tank

Maintenance performed on 2/18/2007

Tank is Fiberglass.

Tank top has down tubes for macerator and pump out. Both were corroded through about 5 inches from the top, preventing emptying. Have had Bay Marine rebuild it. Found the aft macerator not working and have rebuilt it. Used a rebuild kit and also found the large thrust plate was corroded through. This required a special order.

Took tank top to Bay Marine Boatworks in Richmond, CA to have it rebuilt.

They did an excellent job and put a couple of really robust stainless tubes in.

Cost was $323.94

Old macerator would not self prime. First rebuilt it using the kit. Tried it again and there is still something wrong with it. Purchased a new macerator. Then I figured out it would screw into the top of the new plate. So I did that, eliminating one hose (newly bought) and minimized the lift. Had to extend the wiring to reach to the holding tank.

All is working now.

Maintenance for Washer / Dryer

Vacuum lint exhaust line..

Maintenance performed on 6/20/2006

Vacumed. Not much apparent lint. Air flow is somewhat less than expected in flow and temperature. But all seems to work.

Maintenance performed on 9/28/2006

Maintenance for GPS

Check

Maintenance performed on 9/2/2006

Call Furuno and ask why it is taking so long to acquire a fix.

Problem is a dying unit. I ordered a new GP32 to replace this GP50.

Replaced GP50 with new GP32.

Maintenance for Radio

Install AIS Receiver

Maintenance performed on 4/18/2007

Installed a new 8' VHF antenna next to the DGPS antenna.

Mounted the receiver behind the VHF radio 1.

Wired the power to the VHF circuit braker.

Routed the data cable to the nav computer.

No problems encountered.

Maintenance for Rear View Video

Repair

Maintenance performed on 7/20/2006

Check out the spec sheets for the rear view camera and the flat panel display. I believe they are mismatched. If so, then add an appropriate resister to match them.

The flat panel did not have detailed input specs. So, I don't know if it is being over driven or what caused the screen to go nuts.

Maintenance for VHF Radio

Check

Maintenance performed on 9/2/2006

Check out the transmission capability of the M-127. The M59 was able to reach SFO Bay on high power but the M-127 could not. I also noticed a problem with it when trying to talk to the Monterey Harbormaster.

1. It was not transmitting on high power at all.

2. After trying over and over, it seems now to be transmitting on high ok, but need to do a radio check.

Fixed. The problem was a loose antenna connection at the set. I squished the male plug end a little to make it oblong and improve the fit. High power now working.

Maintenance for Genset 1

0050 hour service

Maintenance performed on 2/20/2006

I checked this out yesterday (12/28) and found that the motor mounts are providing sufficient insulation. I also found the exhaust was in contact with the top panel of the sound box, causing it to vibrate. I opened a gap between the exhaust and the panel, which reduced the vibration, but not much of the noise. I am now investigating a sound blanket to go over the sound box.

0200 hour service

Check injectors - Talked to Bay Marine and they said if there is no black smoke, then there is no need.

Check and flush cooling system - Will be doing this with the haul out.

Change impeller in water pump - The keel cooled system has a metal pump, not an impeller type so this is not needed.

Check state of charge of batteries - Checked.

Change fuel primary filter.

Maintenance performed on 5/28/1998 at 1057 hours.

In March Philbrooks did the following:

Maintenance performed on 6/4/2005 at 2895 hours.

Changed filter 2 (aft) and switched to filter 1.

Vacuum guage reading in the red all the time.

Replaced with new Racor Guage.

Maintenance performed on 7/2/2005 at 2897 hours.

Replaced the Racor vacuume guage. The old one was a vacuume and pressure guage and was constantly reading in the red even when I disconnected the vacuume line. The new one is a vacuume guage only.

Also, the when I removed the old guage, there was a brass pin on it and the new guage had instructions to remove the pin to reset the guage to 0 it. I did and it did. So, I have kept the old guage. The new guage did not have such a pin so might be self adjusting.

Hopefully, I got all the connections back air tight.

Change Transmission Oil

Maintenance performed on 7/4/2006 at 2942 hours.

Change the transmission oil to 30 weight. The pressure in the transmission is too high.

Other repair and replace

Maintenance performed on 12/28/2005 at 2932 hours.

Drained and replaced the transmission oil. Cleaned the suction screen.

Repair and replace

Maintenance performed on 12/28/2005

Drain oil from transmission and clean oil screen.

Completed today. The oil pressure remains at 350 lbs. So, that was not the problem.

Maintenance performed on 12/30/2005 at 2932 hours.

The Nordhavn guy I talked to while visiting Dana Point in October said I could increase the alternater up to 160 amps. The current VDO guage registers up to 150 amps so it should be ok. I need to check, but I think when the current alternator was rebuilt in 2004, they increased the output. I believe I have seen the amp meter pegged.

I have decided to wait until the current alternator dies before replacing it.

Repair and Replace

Maintenance performed on 12/11/2005

Replaced the transmission oil temperature guage.

The current guage seems to be reading high. The sending unit is a two-spade 6-24 volt plug with a 14mm diameter and 1.5 mm threads. I bought a new one but did not use it since it only has one spade. Am waiting to see how it reads.

Maintenance performed on 12/11/2005

I replaced the Transmission pressure guage and sensor. The new pressure reading is still 350 lbs. So, I will drain the transmission oil next and clean the screen. I suspect the screen has not been cleaned in quite a while.

Maintenance for Misc

Lube the rudder post bearing.

Maintenance performed on 7/9/2006

Removed the pillow block mounting bolts, aligned the block with the bearing, top to top. Pumped grease.

Repair and Replace

Maintenance performed on 9/2/2005

I replaced the rusted spring that was connecting the two rudder position indicators together. I found a tie rod at a hobby store that could be cut and adjusted over a broad range of adjustment. I need to run the boat to adjust it now.

Maintenance for Steering

Check bow thruster gear oil

Maintenance performed on 2/20/2006

Bolt is 9/16 inches

Oil was full.

Remove fill bolt at front of flange near tube.

Oil level should be at the top of the bolt hole.

Fill with 90W gear oil.

Check the pressure in the fluid

Maintenance performed on 8/13/2005

Should be 30 lbs.

Was 29. Close enough.

Maintenance performed on 1/1/2006

I took the steering arm off and unbolted the pillow block from the mounting frame. The coller holding the bearing in place is rusted in place, so I could not take the bearing and block off the rudder post. There is a groove that runs around the bearing and a hole that goes from the groove into the bearing. The hole is supposed to line up with the grease nipple on the block but doesn't because the rudder is at an angle.

The bearing can be removed from the block by taking it off the rudder post, rotating it 90 degrees to the block and sliding it out the bottom.

Until then, remove the pillow block mounting bolts, align the block with the bearing, top to top. Pump grease.

The hole was also at 180 degrees from the nipple, burther complicating the situation.

I rotated the outer bearing ring to line the grease hole with the fitting, aligned the bearing with the block and pumped grease into the bearing for the first time and lord knows how long. The bearing is a little loose and should be replaced. A new hole should be drilled in the pillow block to align with the groove in the bearing.

The bearing can be removed from the block by taking it off the rudder post, rotating it 90 degrees to the block and sliding it out the bottom.

Re-tie port side snubber to match starboard side. Port side is twisting, starboard is not.

Turns out both tied the same. I rotated the port side so top and bottom knots are aligned. Also replaced a bunch of wire holders on mast.

Replaced TPS chains with wire.

Installed dock line snubbers on 5/8 inch line between the wire and the boom.

I tested on side and the snubber removed the vibration. Now both sides are set up and ready for a full day trip test. My concern is whether the snubbers will hold up to the amount of pressure they will take. I think I may have to upgrade to 3/4 inch or 1 inch line and snubber for the long haul.

Replaced the impeller and gasket. Found salt water corrosion. The rule is that the outer plate should be removed and flushed with fresh water after use. Also, we need to turn the impeller every time the oil is checked so the fins on one side do not get folded up.

Create and install light boards. Try finding black vinyl to use. First guess would be to go to Home Depot and find gutter material.

- Looked in Home Depot and struck out.

- Now looking at vertical blind head boards.

- Found vinyl gutters at Osh. I've made two light boards from the 10 ft section. They look a little small, but worth a try.

- They are the right length (12") but sides are too short. Need 4 inch sides. Otherwise this is the right approach.

Used gutter but it needs to be an extra inch high and about 6 inches longer.
